If little Jimmy doesn’t know how to tie his shoe yet, he may know how to work a smart phone. At least that’s what a recent study shows.
“The survey says that while 58% of kids age 2 to 5 can play a basic computer game, but only 52% are able to ride a bike. While 19% can easily use a smart phone app, but just 9% have learned to tie their own shoe. Wow, got to work on that.”
AVG Technologies asked more than 2,000 moms to compare their kids’ tech skills to their basic life skills. And while some find we have to - quote - “work on that,” NBC found some humor in the matter.
“I happen to know a young man named Jack who is very very very good with smart phones.”
"It’s crazy.”
“It’s scary.”
“But can he ride a bike?”
“No.”
“He’s 19 months.”
“He can barely walk.”
Shepard Smith of Fox News says he sees this in his own family.
SHEPARD SMITH: "I have a nephew that still poops himself and calls me Depa, and says ‘chips, chips, chips.’ But if you give him this thing and he can beat every game on it. I mean he knows how to get to it. I’m like how do you do that? You can’t say hello. It’s impressive.”
But while impressive to some, ABC-affiliate KVIA’s article features a mom who doesn’t think this is a laughing matter.
“...she believes that children need to be well-versed in the ways of technology to compete...’[But] considering that drowning is a top killer of kids in the U.S., learning how to swim and other basic skills can't be ignored.’”
The study shows 25 percent of kids could open a Web browser, but only 20 percent knew how to swim. PCWorld quotes AVG’s CEO, J.R. Smith, who thinks this could be a wake-up call.
“As our research shows, parents need to start educating kids about navigating the online world safely at an earlier age than they might otherwise have thought."
So what do you think? Should we be celebrating this new age phenomenon? Or should we strive to unplug the kids?
