When you think about binge drinking, male college students might come to mind and a new CDC report says that is true. But the same data shows that young married couples from the burbs and well to do seniors are binging and in large numbers. Here’s HLN with quick recap.
“More Americans are hitting the bottle and hard. startling here. One in six adults is a binge drinker according to CDC research. That is more than 38 million people. Binging is having four to five drinks at a time.”
And the number of deaths caused by binge drinking is staggering. CDC reports it is about 88,000 per year. Fox News rings in saying it’s a huge problem.
“Actually, it may be worse than alcoholism. It’s been really under appreciated because people don’t realize that if they drink a lot at a particular time that that might actually be worse over a long period of time. CDC is estimating 88,000 deaths per year from binge drinking.”
And a CNN anchor was surprised to find out what constituted a binge.
“And get this! Each one of those binges averages 8 drinks! Wow!”
The New York Times reports most of the alcohol consumed in this country is consumed during binges. To read the CDC’s full report - click on the link in the transcript section.
