Get ready to pop the champagne—researchers have found a new way alcohol can help keep you healthy.
Here’s KABC—
“Two drinks a day were 23% less likely to develop dementia… Researchers believe small amounts of alcohol may in effect make brain cells more fit. However, heavy drinking is associated with a higher risk for dementia.”
So don’t break out the brandy just yet. WebMD tells us “moderate” means one drink a day for women, and two for men.
And which glass do researchers recommend? The wine glass, of course.
“Resveratrol, found in wine at fairly high levels, is a naturally occurring antioxidant too that decreases the stickiness of blood platelets and helps blood vessels remain open and flexible.”
As far as the beer and spirits go, it’s still OK. WFLD explains almost any alcohol will help—in moderation, of course.
“Alzheimer’s and dementia comes from some plaque build up in the brain so the thought is that alcohol might have an anti-inflammation, anti-inflammatory effect on the brain..”
Not a drinker? Don’t worry says Healthday.com - there are alternatives.
"The Mediterranean diet with whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, olive oil and moderate red wine also reduces the risk of dementia, as does exercise, social engagement, mental activities and an optimistic outlook on life.”
