Ever dreamed of going on a magic carpet ride? You might be in luck--
DVice.com reports a grad student from Princeton has created a prototype of the flying fantasy.
“It’s less Disney and more drop-dead cool…a thin, 4-inch sheet of plastic that hovers just above the ground…is wired with a complex system of electrical sensors and conducting ‘ripples’ of air moving front to back of the sheet that propels it into the air." (video source: BBC)
Good news is—it’s a pretty simple setup.
The BBC says the plastic sheet doesn’t have propellers or gears like the usual hovercraft.
Bad news—you can’t actually ride it.
The crafty creator says-- it would need to be a little bigger to hold a human.
“…a flying carpet powerful enough to carry a person would need a wingspan of 50 meters - not the best vehicle to take on the streets just yet.”
A Huffington Post blogger says-- if it does work...imagine the possibilities.
“Though existing materials do not yet allow feasible use by human riders, Mars exploration rovers using this technology could be a possibility.”
But Disney can attest- magic carpet techology can sometimes unravel. KIRO reports on this magical mishap during the stage production of Aladdin.
“Jasmine on the flying carpet, upside down. You can see them hanging and her hair is just flying. They tried to get the audience to evacuate. You can hear the characters Aladdin and Jasmine screaming.”
Disney was holding up its carpet the old fashionied way-- with wires. The Orange County Register reports both actors were wearing harnesses and are safe.
