President Barack Obama's Stimulus Bill celebrates its one year anniversary, but not everyone is celebrating. Americans are divided over whether or not the massive stimulus package has created new jobs, since unemployment is still almost 10 percent.
We're looking at perspectives from CNN, The Takeaway, FOX News, NPR and WPRI-12.
A business correspondent for CNN says there is no connection between the number of jobs created and the amount of stimulus money spent.
"If you want to try to divide the number of dollars spent by the number of jobs created, that's a tough thing to do. There's some, a lot of this money was spent on extending unemployment benefits for people, food stamps, things like that that were necessary for the time that we were going through that don't necessarily result in brand new jobs created."
On The Takeaway, one woman who works at a community health center offers a contradictory view.
"We've really seen the effect of this economic stimulus. It's allowed us to expand in some cases or at least to hire new staff. We're seeing more people than ever because we provide high quality care to a lot of people who don't have health insurance or who have been laid off."
On the national level, Martha Stewart, whose company has done well during the recession, explains why she favors the stimulus.
STEWART: "I think without a stimulus we'd be in a lot worse shape."
CAVUTO: "Really?"
STEWART: "I was listening to the pundits this morning, and of course, you know, they were saying it wasn't a big enough stimulus now. But who knew? Who had ever done a stimulus before? Right? When was the last time we did a stimulus package? So I think-"
CAVUTO: "Cuz a lot of critics just said we threw money. So it's-"
STEWART: "Well, I think our president has done as good a job as he could possibly have done." (FOX News)
But NPR reports not everyone is pleased with the stimulus. An Iowa wind power plant has not done well, even though loans for renewable energy projects were a major part of the stimulus package.
"They talk about stimulus money and they talk about, you know, infusion and supporting these kind of things. A lot of us in this kind of business are waiting to see, okay, when will we really start to see the effects of some stimulus."
Getting the stimulus money out to states and cities has proven a problem. One mayor in Rhode Island tells WPRI-12 he is still waiting to receive stimulus funds promised to him.
"The state grabbed a lot of it, filled their budget, and still blamed the mayors, the town managers, and the administrators for their budget woes."
So, what do you think? Has the stimulus helped your community?
