It was the diss heard round the golfing world. Stevie Williams – the man who celebrated 13 major championships with Tiger Woods - won his first tournament with his new mate Adam Scott. CBS Sports has his post tournament comments.
“I gotta tell ya David, I’ve been caddying for 33 years and that’s the best week of my life, and I’m not joking. I’m never ever going to forget that week. … 145 wins now and that’s the best win I’ve ever had.” (CBS SPORTS)
And down goes Tiger after a hard jab right to the gut. The Bridgestone Invitational....the best win of Stevie’s career? And whose win was it anyway? Williams repeatedly called Adam Scott’s win his own – firing up more than a few sportswriters. Here’s the breakdown and a mean left hook back at Williams - from CBS Sports’ Gregg Doyel.
“Given who he is and what he does -- he's a caddie, for crying out loud -- Stevie Williams put on one of the most narcissistic displays I've ever seen in professional sports. … In those 90 seconds he used some form of the first-person pronoun -- I, me, my -- 27 times. He used the word "Adam" once. The word "him" or "he"? Never.”
Woods fired his caddie of 13 years after Williams decided he wanted to caddie for Adam Scott at the PGA tournament hosted by Tiger, the AT&T National. Details are scarce and both sides tell a different story. But Williams’ wounds still seem fresh. His post victory rant angered many athletes as well.
Here’s Fox Sports with some popular tweets. Andy Roddick chimed in…
“Has anyone seen the steve Williams interview from after adam scotts win today? Am I missing something? Was steve the one actually playing?”
And then former Ryder cup captain Paul Azinger…
“Steve Williams breaks the unwritten caddy rule, by talking to the press. Most don't, a few do at times when appropriate. #notapopularguy.”
What a difference a couple of years makes. The Guardian looks at how much has changed between the two. They hugged, and high fived for the world to see – and now things are much, much different.
“[N]ow Woods is no longer the "greatest player who ever played the game" and Williams is no longer his caddie. Once upon a time the two men were blood brothers – now they appear to be sworn enemies.”
So what do you make of Williams’ jab at Woods? Woods deserved it? – or way out of line?
