The late Steve Jobs won’t be immortalized in plastic after all—not without Apple’s permission anyway. WTTG has more.
“You won’t be able to add Steve Jobs to your doll collection anytime soon. The company who announced they would sell them for $100 is backing off—you see them here, In Icons.”
A blogger for Gadget Helpline said the “eerily” lifelike, 12-inch doll was originally set to hit store shelves in February—and could have been largely successful.
“The figure is truly remarkable and resembles the Apple leader down to the finest detail, from blue jeans and black long sleeve[s] to those trademark specs – unlike any other piece of memorial tack we’ve seen before. It’s quite a shame that this tribute wasn’t approached in a different manner – Who knows, it may have gone legit.”
The doll was also supposed to come with a stool, two apples, several sets of arms to recreate Jobs’ signature poses, and a backdrop that read “One More Thing”— Jobs’ trademark phrase when launching new gadgets at media events.
Though the company says they didn’t overstep any legal boundaries, a statement released on their website said they would stop production and sale of the dolls out of “heartfelt sensitivity” for Jobs’ family.
“We understand that this decision will cause many of the fans' disappointment, but please forgive us as there is no other alternative unless to have the blessing from Steve Jobs family…”
But a writer for Pad Gadget says the company’s decision probably has less to do with moral issues…and more to do with legal ones.
“The sarcastic person inside of me is pretty sure that a legal battle with one of the wealthiest families on the planet and the technology company that helped make them that way is the actual motivating factor here.”
In Icons says the figure was meant to honor Jobs’ memory following his death in October. And though production has stopped, you can still find a few of the dolls on eBay…for a mere $2,500.
