ANCHOR GARY COTTON

He’s absorbent, yellow, and a little violent. TMZ has some video of SpongeBob SquarePants...well...squaring up. The SpongeBob impersonator was detained in Los Angeles after fighting two women on the sidewalk. The photos and video were taken by bystanders at the scene...

Things might be going from bad to worse for the sponge. One writer for the LA Times tweets:

“#SpongeBob detained by #LAPD in #Hollywood lat.ms/r9NWqw. Did a study drive him to it? lat.ms/q5640u”

In case you missed it, things were already a little rough for the shamed sponge. Zap 2 It looked back at recent study that may have provoked him...

“It's been a tough week to be SpongeBob SquarePants... On Sept. 12, a study in the Journal of Pediatrics found the cartoon can have adverse effects on the memory and attention skills of children.”

Ok, that might have been the reason, but a writer for LAist thinks there may have been a more financial motive.

“Per city rules, characters are forbidden to demand payment but may accept tips. Tourists who pose for photos with characters in front of the theatre are expected to pony up a couple bucks. Sometimes underpaid or unpaid impersonators become rather aggressive.”

A blogger for the LA Times agrees saying this kind of thing may be ruining some of our favorite characters. He notes legal action being taken against these colorful impersonators, but had some good news too...

“[You] Just had to out-vilify Gumby in the growing movement to strip our childhood heroes of their innocence, didn't you, dude? … The good news: This can definitely not be the real SpongeBob, as we can see his facial foam sticking out his armhole. Phew.”
