U.S. President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus plan has some questioning whether America is moving toward socialism.

Hello, I’m Charlotte Bellis, and you’re watching Newsy.com. That was Newsweek magazine’s most recent cover.

We’re following perspectives from FOX News, Newsweek, MSNBC, conservative blog RedState-dot-com, and the Jackson Sun.

Let’s start with FOX News… who brings us a recent poll:

“Overall nearly a quarter of Americans--23%--think moving away from capitalism and more toward socialism would be a good thing.” (FOX News)

Newsweek editors argue public opinion is not as clear-cut:

“The story, as always, is complicated. Polls show that Americans don't trust government and still don't want big government. They do, however, want what government delivers, like health care and national defense.” (Newsweek)

MSNBC brings us a historical perspective from an analyst who says this conversation sounds familiar:

“You’ve seen this over again in the 30s when we had the new deal and Social Security. People said, ‘Oh we’re becoming socialist country; we’re becoming like Russia. We’re never gonna have any growth.’ Well, we went on to become the dominant economy in the world.” (MSNBC)

Right-wing blog RedState-dot-com declares in its headline:

“Barack Obama, Scaring America Into Socialism.” (RedState.com)

The Jackson Sun agrees…predicting history will remember:

“[T]hat he was the first socialist ever to be duly elected in our 200-year presidential lineage. This is the historical shocker that will forever mark America’s leap from free-market capitalism to government-sponsored socialism.” (Jackson Sun)

MSNBC brings us a supporter of the stimulus package… who says Americans have given themselves no choice:

“… It’s not fair to say the government now is just sort of choosing socialism. We created this system. The government has found itself in a situation where they are the only ones with enough money to try to clean up this mess.” (MSNBC)

Is America on the path to socialism? If so, do you think it’s temporary or long term? Please share your thoughts with us, and be sure to check out our sources.

I’m Charlotte Bellis, for Newsy.com where multiple perspectives help provide the real story.
