The Philadelphia 76ers aren’t taking the season off despite the lockout. The former owners agreed to sell the franchise to Joshua Harris and David Blitzer as well as many other co-owners. Philladelphia’s KYW has the latest.
“Your Philadelphia 76ers have a press conference today at the Palestra where we'll meet the team's new owner new york billionaire Joshua Harris. The Sixers will be announcing the transfer of ownership from Comcast- Spectacor to Harris.”
Did the lockout have anything to do with the sell by Comcast-Spectacor? It doesn’t sound like it according to The Patriot News. They’re reporting the Comcast-Spectator Chairman Ed Snider...
“...told The Associated Press last month that sagging crowds and massive financial losses led Comcast-Spectacor to strike a tentative deal to sell in July.”
And the new owners aren’t wasting any time to change the nature of the Sixers. Philadelphia Daily News reports on who will replace the duties of Sixers GM Ed Stefanski (stuh-ven-sk-ee).
“Rod Thorn will remain as team president and will be the ‘captain of the ship,’ according to majority owner Josh Harris.”
But can Harris win over the fans? A Yahoo! Sports contributor says slashing nine thousand seating tickets by fifty percent let people know these owners are for real.
“...the successful businessmen are sure to have a plan to suit all. Surprises are good, and this, most likely, is only the beginning of a list of satisfying future adjustments.”
And if that isn’t enough to get Philly fans excited about the new owners, Will Smith and Jada Pickett Smith are now co-owners of the team.
