Say the word “Shark” in any language and you’re sure to get a variety of reactions.

We’re tracking recent coverage of sharks from FOX News, CNN, The Guardian UK and the BBC.

The network took advantage of video in which a Great White Shark runs into the front of a shark cage. It happened off the coast of Mexico in the Pacific. FOX news teased the story in a variety of ways:

“he was inside a shark cage… look at how close the shark got”
“nearly taking a diver’s life nearly two divers lives.. how they survived this attack and what makes a great white shark so angry?”
“look at this video… the guy who survived the attack, he is live here with quite a story.” (FOX News)

When it came time for the interview – the subject tried to downplay what happened…

“Luckily for me these sharks aren’t the man-eating predators they’re portrayed to be in the movies. What? What? The fact of the matter I was back in the water 15 minutes in a submersible cage. Which you’re on a platform rather than being protected by a cage. And you know I had four sharks circling at arms length.” (FOX News)

For a different perspective, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper got in the water with White Sharks – without a cage.

“Visibility is low, but then, suddenly, the sharks come into view. It’s clear they see us, but they’re keeping their distance, gliding by slowly, gracefully. It’s remarkable to see them like this – to be so exposed to them to animal that is so feared. Mark told me they don’t like the sound of air bubbles. But my heart is pounding so fast holding my breath is almost impossible.” (CNN)

In the same special called, Planet in Peril, CNN looked at how an estimated 100 million sharks are killed every year…

“This is a public place there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to film. There’s nothing wrong in itself – it’s just that they know the sharks are being over exploited they know the sharks they know they are very sensitive about it. Sensitive because this entire industry depends on consumer demand. All of these sharks have been killed all of these fins solely to make shark fin soup.” (CNN)

CNN looked at the craze behind shark fin soup – and how its popularity means an increase in demand for sharks.

And just how dangerous are sharks? The Guardian UK points out an award winning ad campaign called – Rethink the Shark – which shows people on a beach – seeing something in the water.

Which brings us the BBC website – they have comprehensive coverage of sharks around the world… and ways you can find out more… (BBC)
