New York City is recovering from a violent Labor Day Weekend.
MSNBC has more...
“A burst of gun violence in New York City left at least 10 people dead and 50 others wounded over the holiday weekend. Two police officers were shot last night just block from the annual West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn. Police say it happened after a battle between two armed men spilled onto the street.”
According to the International Business Times, more than a dozen separate incidents led to the high number of injuries over the weekend. Children were among the injured. In response to the events, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg held a press conference urging for tighter gun control.
“Mayor Michael Bloomberg was beside himself. The outspoken gun critic … called the dozen or so separate incidents ‘unconscionable.’ [Bloomberg said,] ‘We need the federal government to step up... Both ends of Pennsylvania Ave., both sides of the aisle. There are just too many guns on the streets and we have to do something about it.’”
Notably, Bloomberg is the founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns-- and has been pushing for tighter government control on firearms. The LA Times explains...
“New York state has some of the country's strictest laws governing the purchase and carrying of guns, something Bloomberg said has helped reduce crime in the nation's largest city.”
But a blogger for Examiner is critical of Bloomberg’s plea...
“While Bloomberg... will undoubtedly use the bloody weekend as a launch vehicle for a new round of gun control rhetoric, it may be a good time to ask the mayor why he thinks new gun restrictions will stop shootings, when existing laws... in the Big Apple did not prevent a single incident.”
Finally, The Business Insider notes--despite the shootings over the weekend, New York City’s crime rate is not that high. The paper says the Big Apple didn’t even make it to the list of America’s 25 most dangerous cities.
