A 7-year-old in a red Pontiac led Michigan police on a 20- mile chase Monday morning.
CNN: “And I look over to my left and I see a kid probably 4 feet tall, looked like he was 8-years-old, driving by himself.”
MSNBC reports he wasn’t just out for a joyride-- he had a destination in mind.
“The boy had taken his stepfather’s car. Stepdad wasn’t home, mom was lying down after having worked a night shift, so the 7-year-old took off to go see his biological father. He apparently had an address but no directions.”
Police say he had a GPS but they weren’t sure if he knew how to operate it. WJRT reports police caught up to the young driver going more than 50 mph.
“At one point the chief says the boy sped up. That is when they decided to slow him down by boxing him in.”
“When I went past him you could see the look on his face, he was crying. And I was just trying to get around him as fast as I could so that way he didn’t swerve over and hit me.”
“The maneuver worked but the scary situation wasn’t over just yet.”
“Then the car lunged forward and so my interaction with him shifted from trying to get him to unlock the door to get him to put his foot back on the brake.”
The boy wasn’t hurt during the incident-- and there is no evidence suggesting he already knew how to drive. The Huffington Post reports- the Department of Human Services and the county prosecutor haven’t decided if any charges will be filed.
FOX: “Well the boy says he took the car because he said he wanted to see his dad.”
“And I bet his dad said, son it’s time for a whoopin’. Come on over here.”
