Game. Set. Bad Call. Tirade. Match? Serena Williams made waves at the women’s US Open final after she showed little love for the umpire- ABC catches us up.
ANCHOR: “Williams had already lost the first set to Australian Samantha Stoser when she shouted, ‘Come on!’ during a shot. The chair umpire called Serena’s outburst- quote, ‘deliberate interference,’ and gave the point to her opponent. That’s when Williams unleashed her wrath.”
SERENA WILLIAMS: “Aren’t you the one that screwed me over last time here? Yeah you are. Seriously, you have it out for me. And I promise you that’s not cool. That is totally not cool.”
Williams went on to call the ump a “hater,” who must be “unattractive inside.” But she reportedly confused this year’s umpire with her 2009 ref. ABC’s Good Morning America runs through William’s all-too-familiar pattern of causing a racket on the court.
CHRISTINE BRENNAN: “She’s a professional athlete- she’s 30 years old. She’s a veteran. She’s won many, many tournaments and she knows the rules, and she has to do better. She has to be able to control her emotions.”
SHARYN ALFONSI: “The last time she played in the Open in 2009, she lost in the semi-finals after a controversial footfall called on her- a call that lead to this.
SERENA WILLIAMS: “I swear to god I feel like taking this (expletive) ball and shoving it down your (expletive) throat. I swear to god.”
It was that 2009 tirade that put Williams on probation- a probation lasting through this year’s Open. So, should Williams suffer suspension? A New York Times blogger gives her the benefit of the doubt.
“Perhaps a better way to have handled that situation would have been for the chair umpire to quietly tell Williams not to yell until the point is over … Williams did not break the spirit of the law, as her shouting seemed spontaneous and passionate, not unsportsmanlike.”
But a blogger for Bleacher Report isn’t convinced, suggesting now’s the perfect time for US Open officials to take some action.
“If the people in charge of the tennis world had any gumption, they would make an example of Williams … [she] needs to be taught a lesson, and what better way than by sitting out for a year.”
Finally- Fox and Friends’ anchor Brian Kilmeade questions the whole scandal, asking, what’s the big deal?
BRIAN KILMEADE: “It’s John McEnroe, it’s Ilie Nastase, it’s Jimmy Connors from the 60’s and 70’s and 80’s."
GRETCHEN CARLSON: “Well then they were all bad role models for our kids.”
BRIAN KILMEADE: “But I’m telling you- people are talking about it today and whether you like it or not, they talked about McEnroe more for his tantrums than for his tennis. And when he even plays on the professional- on the champions- tour today, they wait for him and Connors to blow up. I’m not saying it’s right- maybe Bjorn Borg is the right way to play- but, McEnroe and things like that sell tickets.”
Williams finds out her fate- suspension or fine- later this week.
