It turns out, Republicans and Democrats in the Senate can agree on something. Late this week, the chamber unanimously approved two measures of President Obama’s jobs package. Las Vegas’ KSNV reports-- the measures target one group in particular.
“The US Senate passes a law that will help veterans looking for a job. The legislation gives tax credits of up to $9,600 to companies that hire disabled veterans who have been out of a job for six months. The law also helps create job training programs for veterans and members of the military.”
The bill also develops a new program to help veterans find ways to use their specialized training in the civilian world-- plus-- it allows them to apply for government jobs before they leave the military. Tuscon’’s KMSB explains why these programs are needed.
“A quarter of a million veterans have served since 9/11 cannot find work here at home now. Their 12% jobless rate is 3 points higher than the national average. And the vow to Hire Heroes Act is supposed to help.”
But one analyst tells Fox Business there simply might not be enough jobs to go around.
“For decades there have been programs in place that provide an education for veterans. But we seem to be missing the gap -- why aren’t there programs to provide actual jobs. As we know, we’re in a very difficult market. An education doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a job once you graduate. It seems there should be a way to set aside jobs for these really qualified workers coming back from the armed forces.”
But as Bloomberg editors explain -- no matter how small the return, this measure is more about showing an appreciation for those who serve.
“We have no illusion that these credits are going to create lots of new jobs. But they will encourage employers to favor veterans when hiring...After a decade of brutal warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan...it seems a small and entirely just recompense.”
But those benefits don’t come free. The Washington Post explains how much this piece of Obama’s $447 billion jobs package will cost.
“Overall, the tax breaks and jobs programs for veterans would cost just over $1 billion, Democratic aides said. It would be paid for by extending a fee the Veterans Affairs Department charges to back home loans.”
The House is expected to pass the Senate’s version of the bill sometime next week.
