After violent riots broke out in London’s Tottenham district Saturday night, Sunday saw a repeat of the chaos in other neighborhoods.
The initial riot broke out from outrage over the shooting of a local father and unrest at Scotland Yard.
Many are asking -- was Sunday’s violence due to copycats?
Here’s Sky News.
“They said they were mostly dealing with small, mobile groups carrying out copycat criminal activity in the wake of last night’s violence and looting in Tottenham. The damage was not quite as severe. However, driving through the streets in the small hours, evidence of opportunistic theft was blatant.”
Call it “mob mentality”, but a blogger for The Guardian says -- the rioting rationale is clear. Here’s his take:
“Rioting is often described as ‘mindless.’ The problem is, it's not. I know why the word is used: it expresses our incredulity and sometimes points to the rioting's counter-productiveness...But people who riot do have minds, and in these lie the reasons for their rioting.”
But since many Londoners have already spoken for themselves through physical violence and outlash, people are saying they have no powerful political figures to stand up for their rights. The Telegraph explains –
“The shopowners ... who have spent the day sifting through the ruins of their life’s work must be wondering what they have done to be abandoned by those in power. In between the disgusting bleating about cuts … and the self-justifying management gobbledygook from the police, there are precious few voices from those in authority speaking up for what Mrs Thatcher would refer to as ‘our people’.”
The madness occurred while several integral UK officials were on vacation.. While they were en route to various cities throughout the world, Londoners had a different destination. A blogger for The New Yorker says...
“If you wanted to nudge London, edgy already after the phone-hacking scandal and the ensuing shake-up at Scotland Yard, in the direction of anarchy, you couldn’t pick a better moment to do it than now.”
London police had increased their presence after Saturday’s riots, but the weekend’s protests left many boroughs of London in shambles.
