Google’s new project, Google squared, was announced Tuesday at Google’s searchology briefing.
Hello, I’m Charlotte Bellis and you’re watching Newsy.com.
We’ve been searching for a variety of perspectives when it comes to search… here’s what we’ve found… First of all a look at Google…
The squared search function sorts relevant search information and displays it in a database format that allows for further filtering - as you can see here.
This new approach attempts to make researching the web more efficient. The feature may be particularly useful for product reviews, price checking, and scientific searches.
So what do people think? Let’s start with the BBC and this perspective…
“Google has over 63% of the US market compared with rival Yahoo, on 20%... Despite its lead in the marketplace, users were "one click away" from switching to other alternatives.
The key thing behind why they are still ahead is because they are able to innovate at such a pace.” (BBC)
But, is there another search engine that has Google nervous?
Wolfram Alpha is waiting in the wings and will launch May 18th…. The Independent dubbed Wolfram as “An invention that could change the Internet forever.”
What’s so special -- Wolfram Alpha returns a database with every query. It’s supposed to be a smarter more thoughtful way to search, Wolfram Alpha - is actually thinking about the questions you’re asking.
“Computer experts believe the new search engine will be an evolutionary leap in the development of the Internet. Wolfram Alpha could prove just as important as Google." (The Independent)
Tech Crunch says not so fast… taking an alternative view - believing Google Squared will crush Wolfram Alpha.
Here’s how they put it…
“Wolfram does a pretty good job parsing the information in its own databases, but those databases will never match what is available on the Web.” And that basically Google will always be able to find those databases…" (TechCrunch)
