Talk about on the ropes.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy was attacked while working a rope line at a public appearance Thursday.

Security immediately tackled and arrested the 32-year-old attacker. He could face up to three years in prison for pulling the stunt. The BBC notes, Sarkozy was startled, but didn’t miss a beat.

“The French president was greeting members of the public when the incident happened. He was unharmed and continued to shake hands after the initial shock of the moment.”

This is not the first time the French President ran into problems in a crowd. In 2008, cameras caught him jawing.

“Sarkozy lashed out after offering his hand to a visitor at the farm show, who told the French leader: ‘Don't touch me, you'll make me dirty.’ The president hit back: ‘Sod off then, you stupid bastard.’”

This is the first physical attack on the President of France since Jacques Chirac was shot at in 2002. Chirac, like Sarkozy, walked away unharmed.
