Samsung is preparing to grill Jonathan Ive and other key Apple designers in its ongoing legal feud with the company.
Apple sued Samsung for infringement of user interface patents, design patents, and even icon trademarks. Now Samsung wants Ive to explain those claims in front of a judge.
All Things Digital says Samsung had better be ready for their witnesses.
“Now, Apple has until December 1 to make them available to Samsung for questioning, though the Korean company best steel itself for some harsh answers. Ive and Co. presumably have a lot to say about all of them.”
But Ive is a designer-- and Gizmodo wonders-- is he really the right guy to wring for answers?
“[Apple and Samsung] have been engaged in a legal game tug-of-war ever since. But do they think having a design mastermind speak about the nuances of intellectual property is really the right strategy?”
Probably, says 9to5Mac. Ive was close to Steve Jobs. He knows things.
“Ive is the holder of Apple’s many secrets and inner workings, something Samsung is legitimately hoping to exploit ahead of the trial.”
Either way, Samsung has its work cut out for it. The judge on the case is no stranger to Apple-Samsung legal spats-- and MacRumors reports she ruled in Apple’s favor last time.
“The judge in the case is Annabelle Bennett, who had previously awarded Apple an injunctionbarring the sale of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia and is now being asked to rule on a similar request from the other side.”
The U.S. trial between Apple and Samsung is scheduled for July of next year.
