This year, the Sakharov prize rewards not one but five winners. European Parliament’s prestigious prize for the freedom of thought goes to five representatives of the Arab spring whose actions have revolutionized the region.

“This year’s winners symbolise the struggle for dignity, democracy and human rights and are co-authors of historical change in the Arab world”

The laureates include Tunisian Mohamed Bouazizi, whose death helped to catalyze the Arab Spring when he set himself on fire last January.

Egyptian Asmaa Mahfouz’s videos also helped motivate the Tahrir protests.

“Four Egyptians have set themselves on fire. To protest humiliation and hunger and poverty and degradation they had to live with for 30 years. Four Egyptians have set themselves on fire, thinking maybe we can have a revolution like Tunisia, maybe we can have freedom, justice, honor and human dignity”

Syrian satirist Ali Farzat received the prize along with human right lawyer Razan Zaitouneh, also from Syria. Lebanese newspaper Daily Star reports he dedicated his award to “martyrs of freedom”.

"Freedom is a message that crosses generations. I dedicate this award to all the martyrs who gave their life for freedom and who have learned the culture of liberty"

The Last laureate is Ahmed al-Zubair Ahmed al-Sanusi from Libya who spent 31 years in prison after attempting to depose Colonel Gaddafi.

The EU Observer reports that Europe demonstrated its support of the region’s rebirth by presenting this prize to Arab activists. The Observer quotes E.U. Parliment member Guy Verhoftsadt.

"This recognition is also a pledge from Europe to be there to build upon the achievements of the people."

The Sakharov prize carries an award of 50 thousand euros. It would be presented at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on December 14.
