Hello, I’m Charlotte Bellis and you’re watching Newsy.com.
“What is so strange about being honest and saying that I want Barack Obama to fail if his mission is to restructure and reform this country so that capitalism and individual liberty are not its foundation. Why would I want that to succeed?” - Rush Limbaugh (FOX News)
That was video from FOX News of conservative talk show radio host Rush Limbaugh talking about what he thinks of President Barack Obama.
We’re also watching coverage from CNN, MSNBC, and FOX News.
CNN talks to Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele about the controversy surrounding Limbaugh’s comment.
"D.L Hughley: “Rush Limbaugh is the defacto leader of the Republican party.”
Steele: “No he’s not...”
D.L Hughley: “…I understand that [Rush] wants liberalism to fail. It’s not about the man, but about the idea, that he would rather have an idea fail so that his idea will move to the front, and have that succeed and that is destructive . . .”
Steele:: “Lets put it in context here. . .Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. His whole thing is entertainment. Yes, incendiary. Yes, it’s ugly.”" (CNN)
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow considers the Republican dilemma.
“That is the trouble with republicans. Disagree with Rush Limbaugh that you hope the president fails and you risk alienating your base. . .agree that you hope the president fails, you risk alienating everyone else.” (MSNBC)
FOX News talks to author Bernard Goldberg who takes the perspective that Rush’s comments will eventually hurt the Republican Party.
“If you could make Rush Limbaugh the spokesman for the Republican Party . . .they know he’s a polarizing figure, you either love him or you hate him. [Democrats] figure there are enough people out there who are not politically savvy. . . there are people out there who are not going to buy into Rush Limbaugh’s argument and will turn on Rush and by proxy turn on the Republican Party.” (FOX News)
CNN talks to Tina Brown of TheDailyBeast.com, who takes the view that the Republican’s are backing Limbaugh because there is no one else.
“It’s wonderful for the Democratic Party for Rush Limbaugh out there as this big fat wrecking ball, who has absolutely nothing to offer except a negative position . . .This does nothing for the Republican party, as you’ve seen the poles . . .They just let Rush Limbaugh own this rhetoric because there is no one else.” (CNN)
Ariana Huffington of the Huffington Post tells MSNBC her recommendation for the Republicans.
“There is a right answer if you want to be a governing party again and not be in exile forever, saying yes, I don’t agree with Barack Obama’s policies. But of course, I want him to succeed because it’s about millions of Americans suffering.” (MSNBC)
So how do you think Rush Limbaugh’s comment will affect the Republican Party? What role do you think Limbaugh plays in for Republicans?
