Can’t get enough Facebook? Rumor has it the social media giant will announce a music and media streaming service at its f8 developer conference later this week.
According to the Guardian, users will stream content and play with new social music tools right on their profiles. Their actions will stream in real-time for their friends to watch. CNET’s Buzz Out Loud podcast is excited -- saying Facebook made the right move to bring in such a variety of content providers.
“It would be pretty interesting, and potentially cool. I like the idea that they would partner with all of them instead of sort of anointing one, so that if you already have a chosen service. That’s a smart way to do it if you’re Facebook, because you want everything to happen on Facebook, so you’re not forcing people to change their behaviors.”
Business Insider says this might be the big push Facebook needs to recapture some momentum in the social network scene.
“Facebook is in a product funk, with no big hits since the ‘Like’ button... the company has a chance to wow the crowds of developers and press, and set Facebook back on course to its goal of becoming the first trillion-dollar company.“
TechFlash says this service will benefit the distributors involved -- and Facebook’s huge audience will test their marketing mojo.
“Providers could feel pressure to offer more content for free... Facebook could also make the music-streaming industry more competitive, with the only survivors those that can scale quickly and efficiently.”
The New York Times agrees, but points out a free music model will only work if distributors can keep the record companies happy.
“But even free music requires royalty payments... executives are concerned that Facebook’s platform may bring in large numbers of users who... are not being given much incentive to subscribe.”
Facebook will get into the specifics at f8 this Thursday in San Francisco.
