Pundits barely had time to get over former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain’s surprise win in the Florida straw poll -- when a more predictable result came down in Michigan’s straw poll.
“Mitt Romney won the straw poll at Michigan’s Republican conference. Of 681 votes cast, Romney captured 51 percent and Rick Perry was a distant second with 16 percent.”
An analyst for MSNBC says-- surprise, surprise.
“The margin maybe somewhat of a surprise but the win certainly isn’t. I mean, Romney is definitely a favorite son in Michigan. …The Romney family name is really gold in Michigan and that’ll be important for him. That primary comes a week before Super Tuesday so, which has, you know, a bunch of Southern states voting that could likely tilt toward Perry. So a win in Michigan would be a nice thing for Romney leading up to that to keep his momentum going.”
Romney’s win makes it a second loss in a row for Texas governor Rick Perry, who came in second in the Florida Straw Poll. That, just days after pundits panned his performance at Thursday’s presidential debate, also in Florida. (Video: Fox News)
The results have analysts asking: Is Perry’s campaign kaput?
On NBC’s Meet the Press, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg says, don’t believe the hype.
MICHAEL BLOOMBERG, NYC MAYOR: “The pundits will tell you better than I can. It’ll go up and down a million times, and keep in mind the press wants a battle, so they’ll always try to knock down whoever’s ahead and promote the guy that’s behind or the woman that’s behind.”
And a writer for the LA Times suggests, Perry didn’t come out guns-a-blazin’ for Michigan, perhaps because of Romney’s good standing there.
“Though he received a warm welcome from Republicans on Mackinac, there was no question that he was the outsider here... Rather than drawing distinctions with Romney, Perry focused on his promise to remove ‘the double boots of overtaxation and overregulation’ from voters' necks.”
Finally, the Detroit News reports it wasn’t just presidential candidates getting sized up in the poll.
“The poll also found that Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was easily the activists' favorite to be their party's vice presidential nominee. Rubio received 23 percent... Cain finished second with 14 percent followed by [Newt] Gingrich at 13 percent and [Michele] Bachmann at 12 percent.”
Romney has not officially participated in any straw polls to this point, and his camp says they aren’t really concerned with the results.
