If you miss the ‘80s, get ready for a trip down memory lane -- big hair and all. The trailer for the much-anticipated musical-to-movie adaptation Rock of Ages has hit the web.
ALEC BALDWIN: “This place is about to become a sea of sweat, ear-shattering music and puke.”
Rock of Ages tells the story of a club on the Sunset Strip in the 80s and a group of churchgoing women who try to shut it down. The flick features rock hits and A-list stars -- Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones -- and perhaps most notably, Tom Cruise, playing a rock star. But while the play was a hit on Broadway, will it have widespread appeal? Movieline says no, and that the flick looks like ...
“ … middle-aged folks blaring through cheesy renditions of their favorite ’80s make-out/rock songs while the rest of us patiently wait for the plaintive strains of Journey to end, already.”
But Entertainment Weekly proclaims -- embrace the cheese!
“So cheesy it’s awesome … It may cause seizures, but you’ll want to press play if only to see the TERRIBLE wig on TV’s Jack Donaghy as Alec Baldwin Month continues.”
Perhaps the most-talked about bit of the trailer isn’t the music -- it’s the man. Tom Cruise, to be exact. Cruise was huge in the the 80s -- but will he fly in the 2000s in a movie set in the 80s? He isn’t in much of the trailer,
...but MTV News spoke with director Adam Shankman, who says that’s the whole point.
"The biggest question mark … was Tom and how we presented Tom … He's got a big part in the movie but we wanted to build the excitement of seeing him … It's exciting, it's the big mystery."
Tom and his fellow A-listers sing all their own songs in the movie, and many are wondering if Rock of Ages can rock the box office.
Filmonic says it’s prime to do the job.
“Rock of Ages … may gain a larger audience due to its familiar list of songs … plus with a star studded cast it’s safe to say even fans who aren’t fond of musicals may want to take a look.”
But PopDust says this cast is trying too hard.
“Tom Cruise’s reasserting himself as a sexual icon. … Any semblance of attraction has been long gone. … Shankman’s adaptation boasts a collection of Oscar nominees, pop stars … this film looks like a situation where notable actors are just trying to perform poorly …”
You’ll get the chance to see it all for yourself in June 2012. Bring a leather jacket.
