Rest in peace, TouchPad and Pre 3. We hardly knew you. HP announced word of the killing blow to its webOS devices during a press release on Thursday.  

 

 

So count one less for tablets and the smart phone race -- now left to iOS, Android, Blackberry and WP7. And the tech world is certainly mourning its loss. 

 

 

Gizmodo says it’s too bad,  

 

 

“...because it means fewer choices for consumers. HP had the muscle to do something great with webOS, but it never did. And of course it’s sad to see the company that essentially created Silicon Valley folding up its tent and packing it in like this.”

 

 

But it’s not completely unexpected. Between its lack of apps and updates -- webOS had one foot in the grave already. According to Daily Tech,

 

 

“...the market was swept by a wave of chic Android handsets bleeding edge hardware. Overnight Palm went from legitimate contender to forgotten footnote. One major factor in Palm being left behind was that it just wasn’t keep up with Android in hardware.”

 

 

And it doesn’t end there. According to CNET,

 

 

“On top of confirming it is in talks to acquire Autonomy and essentially shuttering its webOS operations, HP said its board of directors has authorized the exploration of strategic alternatives for its PC business.”

 

 

The final fate of HP’s PC business is still uncertain. The TouchPad and Pre 3 might have met the reaper, but don’t give up on webOS yet -- According to VentureBeat, this isn’t the end. The company announced in its statement that...

 

 

“...it will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.”
