In an official blog post, Google announced it will be pulling the plug on its failed social networking service, Google Buzz. CNN Money reacts to the Buzz kill, calling it anything but:

“Eliminating Buzz will help Google close the book on one of its most explosive missteps.”

Called ‘Google’s worst product’ by some, Buzz was initially created to complete with micro-blogging sites like Twitter, but instead found itself at the center of a heated controversy. The Washington Post explains:

“Buzz automatically created social circles that exposed users’ most frequent Gmail contacts for everyone to see. That triggered an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, which reprimanded Google for violating its own privacy policies.”

Killing Buzz marks a complete transition to Google +, the company’s latest social networking service. Business Insider reports on what Google users can expect in the post-Buzz era:

“Google+ takes a much different approach to privacy, encouraging users to set up specific circles (friends, acquaintances, Googlers) and then share only with specific circles.”

Google Buzz isn’t the only service getting the axe. Several other services are on the chopping block thanks to a product purge they’re calling their “fall sweep.” Information Week has the full rundown:

“Friday, October 14, brings a new round of product closures. Google VP of product Bradley Horowitz said that Google Code Search, Jaiku, iGoogle's social features, and the University Research Program for Google Search will be shut down.”

Since the launch of Google+, the Internet giant has been hard at work streamlining its products. A blogger for ZDNet sings their praises.

“One of the things I’ve always admired about Google is the willingness to pull the plug on products and services. The company has long said that even failures are successes because the company learns from them.”

Users can expect to say goodbye to Google Buzz in the next couple of weeks, while the rest of the products and services will be officially shut down in January.
