Once again, Rihanna released a provocative video to a storm of controversy. Unleashed Wednesday, the raunchy clip for her latest single, “We Found Love -- is jam packed full of sex and drug scenes.
And many speculating whether it’s based on the singer’s notorious relationship with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. We’ll let you decide...
So what is everybody saying about the clip? Writers for the Daily Mail believe the music video does take some inspiration from the singer’s turbulent relationship -- and they’re not too keen on the idea.
“It might be a little close for comfort, but Rihanna appears to have dug out the skeletons from her closest … The singer seems to allude to her abusive relationship with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, casting a male lead who looks similar to the RnB star. While there are no gratuitous scenes of violence, the guy does grab the Barbadian beauty and inks the word 'mine' on her derriere.”
Wakey Wakey News also thinks the video is Chris Brown inspired -- stating that it’s just like history repeating itself -- and in this case, history isn’t pretty.
“It appears Rihanna is trying to set the story straight about her relationship with him. It certainly does not paint him in a very good light, whether it was intentional or not. I am voting, intentional.”
Rihanna tweeted her enthusiasm for her new video -- but no mention of her abusive ex.
“We’ve never done a video like this before. This is probably one of the deepest videos I’ve ever done. It’s all about love and love being like a drug… you definitely get that from this...
The good feeling of it and the dangers of it. That’s what this video is about.”
A writer for TIME praises the video, but prefers not to speculate on whether the actor is supposed to be Chris Brown. Rather, she separates the art from the artist’s past.
“This is an incredible video. In just four-and-a-half minutes, we’re propelled through an entire relationship, from skate park flirting, to drug fueled hooks ups, to screaming and crying and Rihanna’s inevitable mascara-stained face as she says goodbye ... There’s something here that’s angry and dark and joyous.”
And the International Business Times thinks there is at least one thing everyone can agree on...
“Whatever you think of the video, you have to admit there's a strong buzz surrounding it.”
