Is Mango ready to tango in an already-crowded smartphone market?
In Japan, Microsoft has unveiled the first smartphone that runs its long-awaited Mango operating system. The company says the system boasts 500 new features -- including multitasking and deeper social networking integration. (VIDEO FROM IDG)
Other features -- a 13.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and 32 GB of memory. KXTV features a Wall Street Journal analyst who’s pretty impressed.
“They're constantly changing with updates about people or music or news or location information, and that kind of thing, and they are dancing on the screen as you look at the phone. This magical whimsy is incorporated into the phone, and I think it's delightful to use and look at.”
And get this: The phone -- according to Microsoft -- is dust AND water-proof. But will it make a splash? PC Magazine is skeptical.
“The market share of Windows Phone is relatively small compared to other major OSes like Apple's iOS, Google's Android, and RIM's BlackBerry, pegged at only 2 percent of all smartphones in use, according to data from Millenial Media.”
But -- IDG points out -- there’s hope yet.
“With new Android phones appearing almost weekly and an update to the iPhone anticipated in the coming weeks, the smartphone market is getting noiser. Still, Microsoft’s message is expected to get through. IDC predicts Windows-based smartphones will account for 20% of the market in 2015, second only to Android.”
The first Mango handset won’t be available until around September in Japan. As for US-based customers - no dates yet.
