Leo Nunez is not who we thought he was. The Florida Marlins sent their closer back to his native Dominican Republic after an immigration issue that could lead to criminal charges.

Miami’s WFOR gets us up to date.

“Florida Marlins closer Leo Nunez admitted today that he has been using fake documents and a fake ID while playing in the big leagues. His real name is reported to be Juan Carlos Oviedo, and apparently the Marlins have been aware of this issue for several months.”

Nunez, er, Oviedo, a 7 year vet, also lied about his age, now saying he is a year older than what his bio shows. One Miami New Times blogger vents a little steam over the Marlins’ problems.

“Jesus. Could this season get any worse?... The current scandal comes as a swift kick to the cup for an already reeling Marlins organization. We're dead last in the division…and the team's new logo looks like a vomit-streaked McDonald’s sign.”

ESPN points out what Oviedo did was nothing new, saying the Dominican Republic provides a ripe environment for players to jump into the league.

“You’re dealing with an impoverished nation where there’s extraordinary pressure for these kids to sign a contract. It’s a ticket out for people. More than 40 percent of the country is below the poverty line. And you’ve also got an unsophisticated system of documentation.”

The Miami Herald says there may be a surprising number of players sneaking into the league.

“A crackdown that resulted from post 9-11 visa scrutiny found more than 500 players with fake names or ages. Most of them were from the Dominican Republic, where teams lure young players with signing bonuses and shun older players.”

But to those who think Oviedo shouldn’t be allowed back into the U.S. one Yahoo! Sports writer is quick to defend the pitcher.

“He's certainly hurt no one in the process, and while I really hope the Marlins don't bring him back as their closer, I would be more than disappointed if he doesn't get a chance to once again pitch in the majors. He's not the bad guy, folks. He's just a bad closer.”

So will the real Nunez please stand up? It turns out, Nunez is the name of one of Oviedo’s best friends.
