The Apple rumor mill is up and running again -- this time after reports of an Apple event to be held in late January in New York City.

So, what’s the announcement? The long-rumored Apple TV? The iPad 3? All Things Digital says, not likely -- saying their sources point to a more humble gathering.

“According to sources close to the situation, Apple is planning an important — but not large-scale — event to be held in New York at the end of this month that will focus on a media-related announcement.”

And TechCrunch, who has verified AllThingsD’s report with independent sources, agrees Apple’s announcement won’t be any of the usual suspects -- or hardware for that matter --  instead, they report the event will focus on...

“...publishing and eBooks ... Attendance will also be more publishing industry-oriented than consumer-focused.”

CNET adds a little more evidence to the publishing theory -- pointing out Apple senior vice president of Internet software and services, Eddy Cue, is said to be involved. Cue last participated in an Apple event in February 2011 when he announced the launch of News Corp’s The Daily for the iPad. They also note...

"The idea that Apple's event would focus on publishing and iBooks ... seems to make some sense, considering the company is reportedly holding it in New York -- a major publishing hub.”

Still, not everyone is on board with this iBooks idea. Tech Blogger Brian S. Hall thinks the event could mean something much bigger -- like Apple buying Bloomberg. He argues that with the acquisition...

“Apple can instantly and probably significantly grow their iPad business. Those Wall Street guys and rich Hong Kong ex-pats and other Bloomberg customers will absolutely want to show their real-time Bloomberg data on their iPad.”

As of Tuesday morning, Apple was yet to confirm it will be holding a January event.
