Russia is backing Venezuelan arms spending, and Brazil and Colombia are beefing up their arsenals as well. Is an arms race underway in South America?

@Kayla: I certainly do not agree that the US is the 'biggest terrorist in history' but when you talk about history books, who wrote them? The reality is that one man's patriot is another man's terrorist.

The US definitely looks out for its own interests but what country doesn't? The difference here is we are an established world superpower with an abundance of resources making the playing field not as much leveled as other nations may desire.

Republican administrations have, in fact, destabilized governments in Central and South America. Naom Chomsky has written books about US interventions. There have been more than 40 since WW2.

Chavez makes a lot of noise, but his Armed Forces are inferior to the Columbia's. It was understandable he would want bolster up his armed forces after the US introduced more troops into Colombia without coordinating with South American leaders. This was a foreign policy blunder. At a Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) summit meeting in Bariloche, Argentina, on Aug. 28 South American politely expressed displeasure with the US. The leaders affirmed that a foreign military presence cannot "threaten the sovereignty or integrity of any South American nation."

This piece screams of paranoia from both the US and Venezuela - one's afraid the other might steal their oil/gas, the other one is worried that Venezuela is building its arms might. I'm wondering though why did Russia lend Venezuela the money though, and if so shouldn't that hurt US-Russia ties instead?

OK, NoKo could be considered dangerous, but Chavez actively hates us and actually has the money to buy effective arms. We gotta lock this down before it moves past the breaking point.

Um, Kayla. What sort of aid do you think Venezuela receives from the U.S.? As opposed to many other countries in Latin America, Venezuela is not a recipient of U.S. aid. They are taking care of themselves.

'Bigger fish to fry' as in the US? Alright so the imperialism title, we deserve. We should really be the last ones to fault the man for doing what we do best (defense building), albeit on a smaller budget.

But his visits to Iran and ties with Russia are a little scary. Can anyone say coalition?

Oh, never mind. I misunderstood. They're getting the money from Russia. But still, the US is the greatest terrorist in HISTORY?? Read a history book lately?

Wait. How's Chavez going to take billions in aid from us and then call us the most dangerous terrorists in the world? Why are we even giving him money for things like this if he doesn't want us near his country to fight the drug wars? Seems to me Chavez is like the US's ungrateful child.
