The Red Hot Chili Peppers are back... but are they better than before? The name of the band isn’t the only thing that is red hot this week.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers released their tenth album “I’m With You” after a five-year hiatus leaving critics with a lot to talk about.
The main talk of the town? The addition of a new guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer. He joined the band after their two-time platinum album “Stadium Arcadium.” The new guy on stage has worked with Beck and Gnarls Barkley.
He replaced John Frusciante, who left the band in 2009 to work on a solo career. So, did the new guy measure up? The Vancouver Sun believes he did, but he wasn’t featured enough in the new album to be enjoyed, which left it unpolished.
“Klinghoffer has no problem fitting in, despite, at 31, being about 17 or 18 years the junior of the other three members. If anything, the problem is that the young addition isn't featured nearly enough, since his all-too-infrequent, all-too-fleeting solos are the reddest and hottest thing about the under-baked "I'm With You."
But The Washington Post believes the replacement leaves a big part missing because Klinghoffer’s style isn’t like Frusciante’s, making this album “experimental” as opposed to previous albums. The article says,
“Frusciante’s replacement, sideman Josh Klinghoffer, is subtler and less obtrusive than his predecessor. Without Frusciante’s spiky, squalling guitar, “I’m With You” is milder and less emphatic than any previous Peppers disc, and more experimental.”
Some may say under-baked, others may say experimental, but the true controversy started with a Rolling Stone article calling the album a “come back.” That didn’t make front man Anthony Keidis too happy. Keidis disagrees in an interview with MTV, saying this album is anything but.
"What did we come back from? Malaria? Maybe [Rolling Stone meant it] in the traditional sense of the word, like 'coming back' from our break ...'Comeback' sounds like you quit and then started again, we didn't quite quit."
”I’m With You” hit stores Tuesday. “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” was the most downloaded single on the day of the release.
