The News Corp kitchen just got a little hotter.
Rebekah Brooks is out. CNN -- has Brooks -- on why.
“I feel a deep sense of responsibility for the people we have hurt and I want to reiterate how sorry I am for what we now know to have taken place. I’m the focal point of the debate here. This is now detracting attention from all our honest endeavors to fix the problems of the past.”
The burning questions remains -- what did Brooks know -- and when?
Labor Party Leader Tom Watson tells Sky News -- it was time for Brooks to go. And he already knows who he wants to hear from next.
Tom Watson: “It was inevitable--she had to go. And she gave the resignation statement that should have been given a week and a half ago (FLASH) She still has to be held to account for what she did...I do think her departure will now move the focus onto Mr. James Murdoch and what he knew about authorizing payments to buy the silence of hacking victims.”
The New York Times reports, the Murdoch’s know -- the limelight is now shifting to them.
“Rupert and James Murdoch abandoned efforts on Thursday to avoid scrutiny next by a parliamentary panel investigating the scandal, saying they would testify before Parliament’s select committee on culture, media and sport, which is the main parliamentary panel investigating the phone hacking. "
In that same article, Murdoch tells the Times he’s eager...
"...to address some of the things that have been said in Parliament, some of which are total lies.”
But the scandal is hardly over. The Los Angeles Times reports the FBI...
"...has opened an investigation into whether British reporters tried to access cellphone messages and records of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in violation of U.S. law”
And Brooks’ resignation doesn’t spell the end of her troubles. A spokesman for Deputy Prime Minister told Guardian UK:
“People will, rightly, expect Ms.Brooks to come to the select committee next week to give evidence. People still need answers. She owes it to the victims of phone hacking and the country at large to explain her role in what happened.”
Brooks will be replaced by chief executive of Sky Italia, Tom Mockridge--who will assume her post immediately.
