While her classmates go back to school -- internet sensation Rebecca Black, will be having her cereal and ...well class, at home. Here’s the singer on ABC...
“Rebecca Black: When I walk by they’ll start singing ‘Friday’ in a really nasally voice or you know they’ll be like, ‘Oh, hey, Rebecca, guess what day it is.’
Announcer: This spring the teasing became so relentless-- Rebecca opted for home schooling. Now her mom also plays the role of teacher.”
But a Codeword blogger says the alleged bullying seems rather tame.
“Even though bullying sucks, the alleged ‘bullying’ that took place was actually just innocent teasing... her fame was a result of releasing a terrible auto-tuned song with bad lyrics, so what do you expect kids to do? ...Cry me a river already.”
Despite all the criticism, Black has numerous supporters -- including TV host Charlie Brooker -- who was one of the first to come to the ‘Friday’ singer’s defense.
“To address the members of the Rebecca Black hate mob directly for a moment: Dear imbeciles thanks to your hard work. Rebecca Black who you dismissed as a hopeless wannabe is now a bonafide megastar. Look, here she is on a brilliant edition of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, just like you’ll never be.”
Black seems to have dealing with the haters since Friday went viral. Back in March--TIME talked to experts about the defintion of cyberbullying, and whether Black was a victim.
“...no matter the definition of cyberbullying, these experts agree that its time to lay off Rebecca Black. As [one researcher] so eloquently puts it, ‘Words can hurt!’”
Black’s mother says homeschooling her daughter will allow her to have more time to work on her singing. Meanwhile, the FBI is looking into several death threats that have been made against the 14 year old.
