‘Breaking Bad’ becomes reality in Boston. WBZ explains the real life story of a professor allegedly turned meth dealer.
“A 74-year-old Suffolk University professor who also lectured at BU for two decades is now charged with running a meth lab. Irina Kristy is her name and she’s going to be arraigned sometime next month, accused of running the lab with all those toxic chemicals. Kristy’s son, Gregory, is also facing the same charges. He pleaded not guilty last month.”
Kristy faces charges including distribution of meth, conspiracy to violate the drug law and drug violation in a school zone, which piqued New York Magazine’s interest.
“The school zone bit comes from the piece of this scenario that's perfectly Breaking Bad-ish in its just-plausible insanity: The lab/residence is roughly 500 feet from both City Hall and an elementary school.”
Those same facts make an io9 blogger suggest-- Kristy wanted to get caught.
“Geez Louise, even [the Breaking Bad guys] quickly learned that you never cook where you eat … After this incident, there really should be an unofficial, pan-collegiate statute guaranteeing students free As if their professor is accused of cooking crank.”
But Boston University’s Daily Free Press reminds us-- Kristy is innocent until proven guilty.
“‘It could have been possible that Professor Kristy had no knowledge of the fact that there was a meth lab in her house. Her son could have convinced her that it was some crazy lab experiment, but chances are she knew full well...’”
Suffolk University did not renew Kristy’s contract for next semester, while Boston University is keeping quiet on the scandal.
