After a grueling search across multiple states and into Canada, the body of 11-year-old Celina Cass was found by divers in the Connecticut River.
NBC reports --
“Dive teams located Celina Cass’s body Monday in the Connecticut River, a quarter of a mile from her home.”
NEW HAMPSHIRE SENIOR ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL JANE YOUNG: “We have brought Celina home, not the way we wanted to bring her home.”
“Authorities say they don’t know how or where her body was put in the water, shifting this week-long missing persons case as a criminal investigation.”
And questions still remain. Authorities haven’t identified any suspects, and according to a report from the International Business Times:
“An autopsy on Tuesday on the body of the 11-year old girl did not produce results, but since tests can take up to six weeks, there is no reason to think the cause of death will never be known.”
Celina was last seen on her computer last Monday night, July 25. Her sister and a friend began a door-to-door search on Tuesday.
Johanne Rodrigue, whose son was friends with Celina, said quote-- “My first thought was she had met someone on the Internet... They weren’t girls who hung out on the street. They were quiet girls, very respectful.”
What followed was a massive manhunt involving several government agencies and plenty of locals.
According to The Union Leader, residents of New Hampshire are, in a way, united--especially under circumstances like these:
“New Hampshire remains a small state and when something terrible happens to one of us, it often seems that all of us are affected to some degree. Such has clearly been the case with Celina Cass of West Stewartstown, part of the North Country that is itself its own special community within New Hampshire.
Once Celina went missing, candlelight vigils were held in hopes of bringing her home alive. But when family, friends and fellow citizens of the small New Hampshire town got wind of her death, they held a somber vigil to honor her life and say goodbye. (Video from ABC)
Senior Assistant Attorney General Young didn’t disclose details about Celina’s condition or any possible leads in the news conference Monday. No suspects have been identified, but a feverish search for answers continues.
