"A 30 day jail sentence for killing a man while driving drunk.  That is the punishment handed down Tuesday to NFL player Donte' Stallworth."

"This happened only 3 months ago.  Stallworth was caught with a .12 blood alcohol at 7 oclock in the morning and he ran over a guy with his Bentley."

“In the plea deal, Stallworth also reaching a confidential financial agreement with the family of the man killed.”

But does the punishment fit the crime?  This question has the media speculating…

And MADD is speaking out on the sentencing saying they are “profoundly disappointed”… We have this perspective from their website..

“We have heard there may be a contribution to MADD in the settlement and if that is true, we will not accept any monies. This case is a clear test of the NFL’s continued tolerance of drunk driving…”

In 2008 Stallworth played for the Cleveland Browns, we have a perspective from The Plain Dealer, Cleveland’s local newspaper.

“Even diehard Browns fans were stunned that wide receiver Donte' Stallworth might be able to suit up again after just a month in jail…Justice wasn’t served.  The well connected and the money were served.  I’m so tired of seeing celebrities beat the law…”

But not everyone agrees that Stallworth was given preferential treatment…Here’s the perspective of ESPN legal analyst Lester Munson

“I don’t think so. I think that he handled this the way a doctor or a lawyer or anybody else would have handled it who realized he had made a terrible mistake.  He tried to do the right thing day after day after day for the last 3 months and now he is rewarded with a very good outcome.”

In addition to the 30 day jail sentence Stallworth received 1,000 hours community service, 2 years of house arrest, and 10 years of probation.

So do you agree with the sentencing?  Do you think athletes and celebrities are given special treatment?
