After just four years, Russia’s most powerful politician is expected to return to the seat currently being kept warm by president Dmitry Medvedev. In a stadium of 11,000, Vladimir Putin formally accepted the ruling United Russia party’s 2012 presidential nomination.

BBC sums it up.

“We believe in justice. We protect the dignity of this country and of every individual. Truth is on our side and victory will be ours.”

Putin also promised long-term stability and warned western governments against attempting to create political discontent in Russia and influence election results.

Putin is expected to have no trouble reclaiming the Presidency in March according to the Associated Press. The New York Times notes – Putin offered no surprises during his nomination speech.

“ …no bold policy proposals or dramatic political announcements that might serve as a national rallying cry or to galvanize voters. Instead, Mr. Putin suggested that it was natural for citizens to be frustrated with the incumbent party … He said his government’s performance ... proved that it was far superior to its predecessors and deserving of the people’s continued support.”

The Wall Street Journal reports Putin’s United Russia is expected to lose its super majority in parliament this December for the first time since Putin came into power. That means they’ll also lose the ability to pass legislation or amend the constitution without opposition.

And Euronews says with growing discontent, Putin no longer seems as invincible as he once did.

“And you never use to hear anyone boo him in public.  But this November Putin got in the ring to congratulate the winner of a Russian mixed martial arts fight. When the live broadcast was replayed later, the booing was cut out. But on the Internet, angry Russian’s made clear they had not been razzing the honorable loser of the match as apologists had hastily suggested but Putin.”

A writer for the Independent says if wrestling fans are booing Putin – anything can happen.

“What matters is what a preponderance of Russians believe … it is at least possible that the country's Prime Minister and former President … was booed in public. That, over and above any reality, marks a watershed in Russian politics. … But when Russians believe that Vladimir Putin can be booed in public, nothing, but nothing, should be ruled out.”

But an opinion writer for The Moscow Times says even if voters rejected both United Russia and Putin, little would change in Russia’s political landscape.

“Putin made matters worse by entrenching this system and allowing officials to steal with impunity, resisting all efforts to introduce openness and transparency into Russia’s political and economic system. … Nevertheless, to hope that a better or more intelligent man, someone more dedicated to the well-being of Russia, could fundamentally change this system is futile..”
