Albert Pujols is making the Winter Meetings in Dallas a little more intriguing this year. With multiple teams trying to sign him, the Miami Marlins made the biggest headline. ESPN has the latest.
“The number one name everyone here in Dallas is watching today is Albert Pujols. The Miami Marlins have reportedly increased their offer to Pujols to a ten year deal. Buster Onley reports his agent met twice with the Marlins yesterday.”
USA Today reports the deal is worth over two hundred million dollars. But the Marlin’s are not the only team to talk with Pujols' agent. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports another team who’s interested is -- the Chicago Cubs. But Cubbies Crib says the offer isn’t what it seems.
“Then again the Cubs may have submitted offer to Pujols that they know will not be accepted only for the sole purpose of forcing the Cardinals’ to up their current offer to their long-time first baseman. That still appears, to me at least, to be the leading scenario.”
But will the Machine actually leave St. Louis? MLB’s Peter Gammons says, if St. Louis wants to keep one of the best players in baseball, they better pay him like it.
“If I’m not mistaken, the offer that the Cardinals made in spring training would have made him the fourth highest paid first baseman. And he wants to be up top. You’re a player, it’s not about money, it’s about being competitive.”
Will Pujols give the Cardinals the last option though? The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is skeptical and said Cards GM John Mozeliak...
“...could not guarantee that the Cardinals would receive the opportunity to match or beat a rival offer, though sources familiar with the process said both he and [St. Louis owner Bill] DeWitt have sought such assurances from [Pujols’ agent] [Dan] Lozano.”
Meetings are said to be ongoing between Pujols’ agent - the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals.
