“Albert Pujols could be back in the Cardinals lineup as early as tonight. Doctors will evaluate Pujols' injury today and could clear him to play tonight. It would be a remarkable recovery from a broken left wrist.”

Remarkable is a good word.  Pujols is taking the field after just fifteen days of rest and recovery from a fracture. Despite that news, USA Today reports, the Cardinals will take it slow with their fragile star.

“He will not start but will be available to pinch hit. Today was the first day Pujols was eligible to come off the disabled list.”

While many are hailing it as a remarkable recovery, others in the media less than impressed with Pujols’ fast return.

The Cardinals have gone a paltry 6-7 in Pujols’ absence, holding precariously on to first place in the NL Central Division. A blogger for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says a rushed return seems reckless.

“We were fairly stunned to learn that Pujols is available to play tonight ... Does it really make sense?...It just seems like this time, caution might have been the better idea.”

Good idea or not, Pujols will be activated.  An ESPN contributor says, Cardinals fans have history on their side.

“This guy is one of the quickest healers I’ve ever seen, he’s one of the most durable players I’ve ever seen, He had an elbow injury years ago I was told most players couldn’t play with and not only did he play, but he played everyday and drove in 125 runs. He’s miraculous in that way.”
