To appeal, or not to appeal.

Current Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor has gone back and forth on whether to appeal a five-game suspension stemming from his career at Ohio State.

The San Francisco Chronicle sorts out the confusion.

“Terrelle Pryor had said he wasn't going to appeal his five-game suspension. Then he said he might, then he said he definitely wouldn't and now he apparently might.”

But now, Pryor is making it official. On Friday he formally asked the NFL Players Association to file the appeal.

ESPN’s John Clayton understands why Pryor would appeal, but doesn’t think he will gain anything from it.

“Probably 100,000 reasons to try to do it because he’s going to lose more than 100,000 dollars. But I think also too, he’s got no chance on this one because the commissioner basically worked it out with him and his agent Drew Rosenhaus that this is a condition of coming in. It’s not carry over from college, it’s how he came into the league.”

So why appeal? NFL Network’s Albert Breer thinks some seasoned players pushed him.

“Concerns from veteran players and agents over the NFL enforcing NCAA penalties are the driving force behind the appeal at this point… The position of veteran players and agents is that the NFL shouldn't be involved in NCAA punishments.”

And Pryor’s move was no surprise to CBS Sports’ Will Brinson.

“There shouldn't have ever been a question about Pryor appealing. This isn't exactly the sort of situation where the players want to just lay down and let the league have its way, setting a precedent for suspending players for actions that were committed while they weren't even in the league.”

Mike Florio of NBC Sports thinks the writing’s already on the walls.

“You’re now making it clear to the world, even though he can say you’re we’re not setting a precedent, you are setting a precedent. You’re crossing a bridge you previously haven’t crossed, and that is the NFL will erect barriers to entry into the NFL.”

Next, Pryor will have to wait for the NFLPA to file his appeal to the NFL -- which is expected on Monday.
