Milwaukee Brewers’ all star first baseman, Prince Fielder, has stirred up a king-like controversy.
Fielder said that he most likely will not return as a Brewer next year, which some are finding strange since the Brew crew are on the verge of making the playoffs. ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian is a little surprised.
“He’s not going back to the Brewers, and everyone knows that, but it’s kind of odd that he would bring that up now because every time I’ve ever talked to him about it he just says ‘let’s just see how it goes and we’ll see where we’re at, at the end of the season.’”
With only 12 games left, the playoffs are right around the corner, and CBS Sports says that should be the focus of this Brewers team.
“While Fielder is only saying what many have guessed at for a while, he doesn't need to be packing his house up before his tenure with the Brewers is done. The team needs to focus on October, not on what happens after October.”
While some find the timing odd, Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin was quick to tell WTMJ Radio nothing wrong here.
"It sounds like some clichés, but also, it shouldn't affect our ball club. They're both free agents. It's a natural tendency for free agents, if they get asked, players today some time want to say what their feelings are at a certain point. Any free agent player at this time probably does think there's a chance of them maybe not coming back.”
While some are criticizing the comments, ESPN’s Doug Glanville is praising them, saying this could be exactly what the Brewers need.
“I look at this more as motivation, Prince Fielder putting it out to his teammates, ‘hey, I love you guys, it’s been a great run here, let’s go out with a blast, do something special, let’s shock the world, and let’s win it all.”
Whether it helps or hurts the Brewers, Milwaukee radio personality, Gene Mueller, says he’s tired of the talk and just wants to see action.
“Shut up and win, guys. Cop the division. Earn home field advantage. Use the off-season to lobby for different roles and bigger cash.”
