2012 presidential candidates: Prepare to be put on notice. Late night political satirist Stephen Colbert might be running for president.

He made the announcement during his Wednesday night show.

“What do you think, Nation?  Should I run for President in South Carolina? (cheering)”

And to keep things interesting, Colbert tweeted about a “super huge big time announcement” on his Thursday night show.

South Carolina-native son Stephen Colbert makes his trade lampooning politics as an blowhard conservative pundit on his show, but he is no stooge.

The comedian filed with the FEC to start his own Super PAC, Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow in May and paid for ads spoofing candidate Rick Perry in Iowa.

The Super PAC already accepts donations from his passionate fan base. So can a comedian make a splash in the primary? ABC reports the director of South Carolina’s Republican party says his chance of winning is “non-existent.”

“Even if Colbert decides to take the plunge and campaign for the Palmetto state’s primary, it is too late for him to get on the ballot, said Matt Moore, executive director of the South Carolina GOP, adding that he ‘is more than welcome to wage a write-in campaign.’”

But anything is possible in politics right? A Public Policy Polling poll that placed Colbert on the list of candidates released January 10th puts Colbert above John Huntsman and wonders...

“...if Colbert had really been on the ballot would enough Democrats have gone out to vote for him to put him in the top tier of Republican candidates?  My guess is if he'd really put some effort into it he could have won 10-15% of the vote and nabbed himself a 4th place finish there.”

Serious or not, it’s certain Colbert will be cracking jokes. On Wednesday night’s show he said he was ready to take the “anti-Romney spot” joking “I am so not Mitt. I’m the one with the glasses.
