It’s been almost five years since British girl Madeleine McCann disappeared while on vacation with her parents in Portugal. Now, authorities say they “genuinely believe” there is a possibility she is still alive. The Today Show and HLN have details surrounding the case.

NBC: “Scotland Yard said this morning it believes there is a possibility that Madeleine is still alive.  Investigators released an age progression image showing what she might look like now as an almost 9-year-old.”

HLN: “Her family has said, they left her in their hotel room, with her siblings, when they went to dinner.  And the little girl, Madeleine McCann then came up missing.”

Britain’s Prime Minister had British police re-evaluate the case a year ago.  CNN reports the team has been going through all the evidence compiled by Portuguese Police, British Police and private investigators hired by the McCann family.

“Up to 200 hundred leads they’re talking about - things that could be investigated, gaps in the evidence.  Things have could be investigated by the Portuguese Police.  40,000 pieces of information is what they’ve got and they’re dealing with right now.”

But, there is a problem – only Portuguese Police have the authority to re-open the case. While Madeleine’s parents were originally suspects in her disappearance, they were later cleared because evidence was inconclusive. Still, the BBC reports...

Reporter: “Public opinion has hardened against the McCanns.”

McCann's Lawyer: “Everyone believes that I am defending a father and a mother that have killed the daughter and got rid of the corpse.”

However, the lead detective on the case told The Guardian he believes McCann was abducted by a stranger. The inspector also said…

“[He] ‘genuinely’ believed Madeleine could be alive, though the team is following an equal line of inquiry that she might now be dead.”

McCann’s parents have not made any comments on the released photo but media reports the family worked closely with police to create the photo.  McCann would turn nine years old on May 12.
