The man suspected of killing of a Mount Rainier National Park ranger -- has been found dead.
Seattle’s King 5 News reports -- Benjamin Colton Barnes was spotted by air units and FBI SWAT team members. KING cautions -- a positive ID on the body hadn’t been made as of Monday afternoon.
An armed gunman is on the run in Mount Rainier National Park after police say he fatally shot a park ranger. Good Morning America has the latest on the pursuit.
“Police say he shot 34-year-old park ranger Margaret Anderson during a routine traffic stop at the park Sunday…”
“Police say Barnes left this car behind filled with body armor, weapons and supplies before taking off into the wilderness, still firing.”
Barnes, an Iraq War veteran, might have been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the mother of his child. NPR says he has threatened her with guns before.
“Barnes was involved in a custody dispute in Tacoma in July 2011, during which [his child’s mother] sought a temporary restraining order against him … [She] wrote that Barnes was suicidal and possibly suffered from PTSD after deploying to Iraq in 2007-2008. She said he gets easily irritated, angry and depressed and keeps an arsenal of weapons in his home.”
Fox News reports Barnes might have been involved in another shooting that same day.
“Barnes is suspected of shooting four people at a house party early Sunday morning south of Seattle, then he drove to Mount Rainier speeding past a checkpoint at 10:20 a.m.”
About 125 campers had to spend the night in a visitors’ center Sunday under police watch, but have since been evacuated.
