Police have arrested 21-year-old Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, the man they suspect fired a bullet into a White House window on Friday with a semi-automatic assault rifle. Fox News has the details of the arrest.

WENDELL GOLER: “It’s certainly clear that you can’t run very long with a national alert looking for you put out by the FBI and the Secret Service. As you pointed out, the slugs found yesterday really confirmed to police that the White House was the target of the shooting, which occurred on Friday, though they have not yet been matched to the assault rifle ballistically.”

The Secret Service worked with local law enforcement to find Ortega-Hernandez, and arrested him at a hotel outside Indiana, Pennsylvania after an employee there recognized him. Police believe Ortega-Hernandez may be mentally ill, and The New York Times is reporting he has an extensive criminal history.

“...[he] has a background of legal problems and is said to have a history of aberrant behavior. … [A Park Police official] said Mr. Ortega had criminal records in Idaho, Texas, and Utah, including for drugs, underage drinking, domestic violence, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer.”

Ortega-Hernandez was actually in police custody in Virginia early Friday; he was arrested for loitering, but was let go. The round he fired later that night went through the White House window’s historical glass, and was stopped by ballistic glass behind it. MSNBC explains where the bullet hit.

“It’s the Truman Balcony on the third floor, right in the middle, outside a room called the Yellow Oval Room that’s near the First Family’s quarters. … The car was speeding down Constitution Avenue, about a third of a mile south of the White House, that would be about eight football fields away …”

An additional bullet was found in the White House’s exterior.
