Two days after a shooting on the Virginia Tech campus that left the gunman and a campus police officer dead, police have identified the shooter. San Francisco’s KTVU has the details.
“Authorities say this man, right here, 22 year-old Ross Truett Ashley gunned down Crouse before killing himself. The officer had pulled over another motorist when Ashley approached and opened fire.”
The day before killing Officer Crouse, Ashley stole an SUV at gunpoint from a real estate office. CNN reports while police still don’t know Ashley’s motive -- they do know one confusing detail -- he was not a Virginia Tech student.
“He was a part-time student at Radford University. He never went to Virginia Tech, which is nearby, and he didn’t know Officer Crouse.”
Despite missing pieces of Ashley’s motive, police do know that after shooting Crouse, and before turning the gun on himself, he fled and changed clothes. The Richmond Times-Dispatch describes the scene he left behind.
“ ... crude handwriting on an exterior wall that appears to be a goodbye note to someone named Sarah. "Good luck and good riddence!" it reads. It is signed MAC … [A Virginia State Police spokeswoman] said investigators are trying to determine if the note may be connected to the shootings.”
Virginia Tech students gathered on campus Friday night for a candlelight vigil honoring Crouse. Pittsburgh’s WPXI says this shooting brought back painful memories.
“The silent ceremony ended with a rousing Virginia Tech war cry. The vigil was held near the stone plaza memorial - that memorial commemorates the 32 people who were killed in the 2007 shooting rampage.”
Those who knew Ashley say he was, a “good kid … a good member of the community.”
