A deadly car crash in UK happened Friday night. Euronews has the details...
“Amateur film shows the result of an horrific motorway pileup in the UK. Several people have been killed and dozens injured in the multiple crashes on the busy M5 motorway in Somerset. Numerous vehicles caught fire. Some 20 cars and 7 trucks were involved in the pile-up, which happened during heavy rain and fog.”
Seven deaths have been confirmed and at least 51 people were injured. Recent figures say 34 vehicles were involved. The Telegraph quotes some of the witnesses.
“We managed to brake and miss the lorry but it was too late, the carnage had already started. All we heard was thump, thump, thump... The smell was horrendous and there were a number of explosions. We walked away, but others weren’t so lucky.”
“It was so dangerous. There was just no way of getting back because of the heat and everything. You could hear things exploding, it was a horrible, horrible scene.”
Police have focused on a black smoke, reported by witnesses, as a clue to the cause of the crash. Anthony Bangham, assistant chief constable, tells Sky News...
“Our main line of inquiry has now moved towards the event that was on the side of the carriageway and we do believe that while there was fog and it was difficult conditions in the area, that actually from witness evidence there was very significant smoke across the carriageway that in effect caused a bank similar to a fog bank, which was very distracting and very difficult to drive through.”
Other reports claim it was white fog, not black smoke, that was responsible. But police are still investigating the black smoke story -- which centers around a fireworks display at the nearby Taunton Rugby Club.
A member of the club tells the Somerset County Gazette:
“I don’t believe the club has done anything improper. … Checks and risk assessments were done. … I am absolutely positive it finished at 8.15pm … I later called 999 when I saw a fire -- I looked across the field and there was no black smoke that I could see.”
Bangham said the police will investigate how the fireworks event was organised, what permission was given for it and what was and was not meant to be happening.
