Southern Baptist-owned Lifeway Christian Resources in Tennessee has recalled thousands of “pink” Bibles. Why? Because part of the proceeds went to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, which donates to Planned Parenthood: one of the largest abortion providers in the nation.
The ‘Here’s Hope Breast Cancer Bible’ hit shelves in October to raise money for breast cancer research - $1 donated per Bible sold.
A writer for the pro-life news website LifeNews is outraged by the pink Bibles and says the ad might as well read “Buy a Bible and support abortion!”.
“While it may be a tempting purchase as an inspirational gift for breast cancer sufferers...it’s a donation to death. One cannot donate money for one good cause to a place that makes its profit off abortion and expect to not have the money mix.”
But a blogger for Little Green Footballs argues pulling the pink Bibles will only hurt women who could use the free screenings provided by the organization-- sarcastically noting-- the Bibles are “contaminated by proximity to the demonic Planned Parenthood.”
“It’s easy to mock this fanaticism, but it’s not really funny that there are now less funds for groups that help women get health services. These so-called Christians are doing a lot of real damage to real people with their destructive obsession with Planned Parenthood.”
A spokesperson for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation tried to clear the air about where exactly the foundation’s money goes. Here she is on WSMV:
“Some affiliates do fund some Planned Parenthoods to do screenings and mammograms, but those are specific affiliates, that’s not headquarters. Tennessee does not fund any Planned Parenthood programs. None of the affiliates have ever funded a Planned Parenthood program.”
But that clarification didn’t change LifeWay’s decision. It released this statement:
“As this project has developed, we realized it was a mistake... Though we have assurances that Komen's funds are used only for breast cancer screening and awareness, it is not in keeping with LifeWay's core values to have even an indirect relationship with Planned Parenthood.”
The Bibles were sold at Walmart and other major retailers.
