University of Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long fired Bobby Petrino in the aftermath of a series of lies Long says he uncovered.

Turns out, Petrino had a long relationship with Jessica Dorrell, hired her for a position in his office over 159 other applicants — and that’s not all.

ESPN has more.

“And of course, learning one thing we didn’t know which is that Bobby Petrino had given this women 20,000 dollars which certainly didn’t help Petrino’s cause. You see right there.”

Just hours after his firing, Petrino made a statement saying he was going to take time off to “repair the damage” he has done to his family.  But not without an apology.

Arkansas Sports 360 has his statement.

“The simplest response I have is: I’m sorry... All I have been able to think about is the number of people I’ve let down by making selfish decisions. I’ve taken a lot of criticism in the past. Some deserved, some not deserved. This time, I have no one to blame but myself.”

So when Petrino decides to come out of exile, will anyone trust him enough to hire him?

A Capstone Report blogger thinks so.

“They say time heals all wounds, and given time, somebody is going to roll the dice on Bobby Petrino again. Somebody is going to allow themselves to be part of his redemption story. Not because they want to help him, but because of the lust for winning.”

Not everyone is so sure. A writer for the International Business Times points to his track record, asking, “What athletic director is going to take a chance on a guy like that?”

“There might be another desperate school down the road, but it will be hard for any athletic department to justify hiring Petrino after the way Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long destroyed him at a hastily called press conference on Tuesday night...Proceed at your own caution, athletic directors.”

Long now finds himself in a tough spot. He has to find a new head coach for this upcoming season.

Sports Illustrated reports, Long is already on the lookout.

“Long said he would begin looking for a new coach immediately but had not yet decided whether it would be for 2012 or '13. ‘We are going to conduct a search and determine whether we can attract a coach that can lead this program,’ he said. ‘If not, then we would go with an interim [coach] and then do a search following the season.’”

Arkansas has several key players returning, and even with Petrino’s departure, Sports Illustrated says experienced players might be a enough to make the Razorbacks a SEC title contender this fall.
